BMW has just announced the 640d xDrive – a four-wheel-drive version
of its 3.0-litre diesel 6 Series – but there are currently no plans to
bring it to the UK.
Set to debut in the next few weeks, the 640d xDrive is the next in a
long line of four-wheel-drive, left-hand-drive only BMW’s that we won’t
see this side of the channel, like the M550d xDrive we drove earlier this week.
The new 313bhp 6 Series will be available in Europe as a Coupe and
Convertible, and will be offered with an eight-speed automatic
transmission.
The all-wheel-drive system shifts power between the front and rear wheels to provide maximum traction in all situations.
BMW says it is capable of going from 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds, while
returning fuel economy of 48.7mpg and emitting 153g/km of CO2.
BMW has said that we won’t see four-wheel-drive powertrains in
anything other than the existing X models until the arrival of the
next-generation 5 Series. Considering the current model is less than two
years old, this may not be until 2016.
